Why Study Literature? - Part 2

Greetings and thanks for coming back to our English class blog! This week's assignment will take 2 possible directions, depending on your blogging from last week (see Why Study Literature? - Part 1):

Possibility #1: You read last week's blog post and responded to the question contained in my post on time. If so, your assignment for this week is to please view the comments from last week's post and look for my response to your comment (I have personally read and responded to each one of your comments). Once you have read my response, add new comments to last week's post to continue our discussion. Again, please check for spelling and grammar, and also be sure that you use at least 150 words.

Possibilty #2: If you missed the deadline for last week's post (Why Study Literature? - Part 1) Please comment to last weeks' post on this week's post (Why Study Literature? - Part 2). PLEASE NOTE: Any comments posted in the wrong place will not be considered.

  1. The literature that we have studied this year both agree and disagree with my views I guess you can say, The literature we have studied this year hasn't really even conflicted with any of my personal beliefs because for one thing, they were mostly stories that were either non-fiction, or just a novel like The Catcher in The Rye, and a non-fiction story like The Crucible or Of Mice and Men, which did not affect my views on anything really, the only topic I can see that one would disagree with would be some type of humanitarian principles like the hanging of suspected witches in The Crucible and the mistreatment of workers in Of Mice and Men. There has not been any perspective about life in any of these works that has rung most true or false because none of these in my perspective pertain to me and the way I go about life. The most enjoyable experience that has come from these works of literature has been The Catcher in the rye because I found this book to be enjoyable and it held my attention because Holden Caulfield was always doing something that was out of the norm like trying to get drunk and have promiscuous relations with various women throughout the story and this kept my interest in the book throughout the whole story.

  2. You should study literature because it's just like studying the tv and watching short episodes....but it would be reading words in books that would te;ll you stories that would try to realte to you studying literature is like knowledge easily given to you for free...lol. There are different styles of literature so you can't say you don't like it base on another novel that could have been written by a lonely old person...lol. There are different styles of everything arnitia Moten

  3. What have been your favorite experiences with literature so far this year?
Is there a book that you have connected with more than the others?
So far, my favorite literature would have to be Catcher in the Ray because I could some how relate to it, like how Holden felt in his situations.
Do you read outside of school?
I read a lot in the summer. While I’m at the beach I’ll read a book.
What have been some of your favorite literature experiences outside of the 10th grade English curriculum?
I don’t really have a favorite literature experience. I take Spanish so I’m learning some other country’s literature.

  4. Tyler Dittmar, At the moment, nothing comes to mind when thinking of new books to read. I would though like to read something that has a little, mystery, action, comedy, or even a little science fiction. When I blogged before, I did not like the books we are reading because I could not relate to them. You replied saying, "...do you think that people from today are so much different from people in previous generations?" I believe we are not that much different from people of past generations because despite different customs and different struggles, us and them are pretty similar.
